Live video streaming influences the sport of surfing

High speed broadband has changed the face of media coverage for competitive surfing. According to Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) international media director, Dave Prodan states that streaming elite surfing contests over the Internet is proving a powerful marketing tool for the sport. Surfing fans from around the world have instant access to live video streaming of each event of the ASP World Tour 2010.

Surf competitions are hard to schedule traditional live television coverage because surfing relies on a set of ideal weather conditions. For example, during the events of Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing (Reef Hawaiian Pro, O’Neill World Cup, Billabong Pipeline Masters), each event has an extended holding period for more than 10 days. Between those days, surfing contests are “ON” during the best/biggest 4 days of that holding period. Therefore, it is hard to predict when to schedule traditional live television coverage. However, live video streaming on the Internet does not need any scheduling which ASP can easily upload a link of the event for surfing fans to watch in real time.

“We are committed to continuing our free webcasting, for us it’s about reaching the biggest audience possible,” says Prodan. Staying current with technology and social networking sites are key factors in increasing audience development.

Another Twitter Outbreak

Article: http://sports.espn.go.com/boston/nba/news/story?id=5759196

Bulletin board material has been around for decades, but the way it's obtained has differed recently in the Sports Media world. After Tuesday's Boston-Detroit NBA contest Kevin Garnett stated that Pistons forward Charlie Villanueva was cancer to his team and the NBA. Villanueva responded by tweeting, "KG called me a cancer patient, I'm pissed because, u know how many people died from cancer, and he's tossing it like it's a joke". In all honesty, Garnett was simply referring to Villanueva's actions as Cancerous to the team and the league only. I highly doubt Garnett was crowning Villanueva as an actual cancer patient.

World Series Ratings were second worst in three decades

Article: http://ozarksfirst.com/fulltext?nxd_id=350246
Despite the draw of a team appearing in their first ever World Series, the Texas Rangers and a team's return to the Series in eight years, the San Francisco Giants (who finally won their first World Series in 56 years and their first in San Francisco), the World Series didn't attract many viewers. According to Nielsen Ratings, the first four games of the World Series earned their second-lowest rating in nearly thirty years (second to a rain plagued 2008 World Series between the Phillies and Rays). Despite the markets of San Francisco and Texas, most of the interest on the Series was lost as soon as the combatants of last year's championship, the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees, were eliminated in the Championship series by the Giants and Rangers, respectively. The Series numbers were disappointing, with an estimated 14 million viewers on Fox, which was out-rated by "NCIS" on CBS and Game 5 was out-rated by ABC's "Dancing with the Stars." Ultimately, viewership is subjective, but Major League Baseball cannot be too happy with its low ratings for the Fall Classic.

This video is a great example of issues in sports media converging in the direction of popular television. South Park is known for poking fun at many of the current issues going on in the media. This is one of the first times I have seen South Park target a sports athlete for a comedy sketch. They decided to combine the BP Oil Spill and CEO Tony Hayward with Lebron James and "The Decision." The Decision was an hour long segment on ESPN, where Lebron James took a whole painful hour to inform the public about his choice to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers and join the Miami Heat. It was a highly contemptous issue in the sports realm. Now, four monthes later, South Park decided to mesh the controversy of CEO Tony Hayward and basketball superstar Lebron James for a great minute of comedic entertainment. I figure that the producers of South Park will continue to observe issues in the sports media domain to extract more material for humorous sketches like this one.
